Driving While Black

Driving While Black

Let’s face it. Being pulled over is stressful enough. However, with the rise of police brutality against people of color in recent years, being pulled over as a colored person could very well be the last thing you ever do. Given that people tend to act irrationally in moments of immense fear, these few tips may ease the anxiety you feel when you see those red and blue flashing lights.

  1. Turn off your engine and roll down the window
  • Turning off the vehicle’s engine reassures the officer that there is no need to fear a fleeing suspect. Although the officer is armed they are likely just as anxious as you are.
  1. Make sure your hands are in plain sight
  • Getting your documents ready beforehand is an unnecessary risk to take. Once the vehicle’s window is down and the engine is off, place your hands in plain sight so the officer will have no reason to perceive you as a threat.
  1. Announce your movements
  • As mentioned before, officers may be just as nervous as you. When asked for your license and registration, announce where you will be reaching and what you will be reaching for. This reassures the officer that you are complying and relieves the tension between the officer and the unknown.

Being pulled over is no fun, but it can be handled swiftly and safely most of the time by maintaining a calm demeanor. Tensions are already high between people of color and police officers right now, but they do not have to lead to negative interactions. Remember to breathe, stay civil and try your best to stay safe and come home!

*Our team at Sojourners Digest understand that all interference with the police for p.o.c. may be different. These are merely suggestions if you find yourself in a situation that you feel can be deescalated. Remember to always stay safe.*
