Love is patient, love is kind. Love led WNBA player Maya Moore to take almost two years off from her basketball career to fight for a man who was serving a 50-year sentence for breaking into a home and shooting the homeowner.
It turns out that the man, Jonathan Irons, was wrongfully convicted. There was no physical evidence connecting him to the crime among other defects. Thankfully the efforts of Moore and others led to his release on July 1 after 23 years behind bars.
But, the bright light after all of the persecution and lopsided prosecution is that Irons and Moore are now married. They had kept their romance out of the public eye choosing to focus on fighting for Irons’ freedom. Now that he is out, so is the word about their connection.
It wasn’t easy getting to this point and at times the two may have had doubts as to whether they would ever really be together.
“I wanted to marry her but at the same time protect her, because being in a relationship with a man in prison is extremely difficult and painful, and I didn’t want her to feel trapped,” he said. “I wanted her to feel open and have the ability to, at any time, if this is too much for you, go and find somebody, live your life,” Irons said on Good Morning America.
