The Double Standard

In 2020 Cardi B and Meg Thee Stallion caused an uproar in social media when they released their record breaking single, WAP

Many critiqued the lyrics and music video by saying that the entire ordeal was too vulgar and didn’t set a good example for their young fans. Some women and men used the pair as a way to tell women that they are not in control of their sexuality.

Now let’s fast forward a few months. Throat Baby by rapper BRS Lash became extremely popular, despite being released in the early spring of 2020. This song goes into great detail what this rapper plans to do with any female he has sexual relations with. Pretty similar to WAP, huh? The Throat Baby remix video, which includes DaBaby and the City Girls, is probably even more disturbing for our more saved and sanctified audience. With an ultrasound of a baby in a model’s throat and DaBaby literally skiing down a mountain of male ejaculation, you’d think that more people would have an issue with this song and the video.

So with that being said, let’s discuss the unbelievably high standards that black women are held to by society and before you start in the comments, no this is not an article black men.

While writing this article we contemplated the difference between these two songs and why was one receiving more hate than the other? The only plausible answer was the difference in gender.

For decades men have dictated women’s bodies – telling them what is attractive, acceptable and appropriate. Some women appreciate this and agree with it, and that’s just fine. Others want total control of their bodies, as they should. This scenario can be played out in pretty much all areas of life. For instance, in the medical field women have to meet so many criteria before getting hysterectomy, whereas men can go in and get a vasectomy on a whim. Another recent example of this male domination over female bodies is that of Chloe Bailey.

Our girl Chloe is blessed in all the right places when it comes to her figure and her fans made sure it was known. However, after embracing her curves and flaunting them in a video posted on instagram, she was slammed and in so many words told that she was no longer attractive because of this video since “no one wants an attention seeking woman.” Chloe came out and apologized for the video and revealed a side of her that resonates with how lots of women feel after being told by insecure women and men that they don’t have to do X,Y and Z to be attractive for men. [Inserts eye roll ?]

Chloe’s case should not have been news. She is a young woman coming into her own  and enjoying life. What’s spectacular about that? If it were a young man, would he be treated the same? Would his personal debut into adulthood be seen as offensive? We’ll leave that question for you all to answer as you please. Whatever your answer is just know that it isn’t right to police any woman on how she dresses or decides to live. If she’s classy, bougie and ratchet then that’s her business like Tabitha Brown would say. Just because a female is not living how you think she should does not mean that she is troubled or going through it. Maybe she’s just minding her business and living her best life, as she should. So, take notes.

Thankfully, we are approaching a time where women can take back control over themselves and be more defensive about what they decide to do with their bodies. So, to Chloe, Cardi, Meg and all other ladies who are struggling with feedback for doing as they please, we commend you and hope that you will continue to do you, boo boo! The world is yours and you don’t need anyone’s opinion to validate your choices or to make you feel any way.
