Five Black Superheroes You May Have Overlooked

The Black Panther peaked a lot of interest because the idea of a Black superhero on the big screen was a novelty. What many may not realize is that the ruler of Wakanda is one of a hard-to-find pool of Black superheroes who put their own spin on “saving the day.”

Though they’ve become more common in the 21st century, Black superheroes are often handled poorly leading to their demise, cancellation or simply a loss of interest. On the other hand however, some have simply not been given a proper chance to be broadcast to the general public. So, in response to that, here are five Black superheroes worth checking out.

1. Static Shock

Arguably the  most well-known name on this list, Static Shock is one of the first names that comes to mind when Black superheroes are being discussed.  “If he’s so well-known, then why is he on this list?” you may be asking. Well, as time goes on, Static is being left behind. He has barely made appearances since his show, “Static Shock,” ended in 2004. During the Worlds Collide event, Static even teamed up with Superman! For such a promising character to be abandoned after four seasons of success on his own TV show, the handling of his character leaves much to be desired.

2. Moon Girl

Moon Girl made her first appearance in November 2015. Moon Girl, real name Lunella Lafayette, is a 9-year-old girl and possibly the smartest character in the Marvel Universe. Moon Girl is actually the successor to Moon Boy, who died after being sucked in a vortex through time. Along with being extremely intelligent, Moon Girl has a giant red dinosaur named Devil Dinosaur. She is capable of mind controlling Devil Dinosaur and she uses these powers to help protect her world.

3. Shuri

We all know Black Panther. You may have even seen Shuri in the Black Panther movie. Did you also know that Shuri takes over as Black Panther and ruler of Wakanda? Shuri has an array of powers that even the most ruthless villain in Wakanda, Erik Kilmonger, would have trouble penetrating. Shuri possesses animorphism, extreme intellect, expert fighting skills, necromancy, super speed, stone skin, etc. Although she is moderately known, should Marvel choose to release a sequel to the Black Panther movie, I have reason to believe that the general public will finally be properly introduced to Shuri.

4. Spectrum

Introduced in October 1982 as the second Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau would eventually come to be known as Spectrum in 2013. Born in New Orleans, Rambeau was a lieutenant in the New Orleans harbor patrol. Upon being exposed to extra-dimensional energy, she became able to convert her body to energy. After multiple stints with the Avengers, Rambeau made a decision to change her hero name (after multiple prior name changes) to Spectrum. Though she has rarely been a main character during her screen time, Spectrum’s backstory is one of the more unique amongst the Marvel Universe.

5. Vixen

Last, but not least, is Vixen. Vixen, whose real name is Mari McCabe, has the power to harness the power of any animal; past or present. She receives her powers through the Tantu totem; a totem that gives the wearer all of the powers of the animal kingdom, so long as they use the powers to protect the innocent. Vixen has, shockingly, only made two solo appearances as a crime fighter. Vixen’s backstory is extremely interesting and it would only be right for her to be given another chance as a solo act.
