Yeah, we know this is a little late, but in the interest of pop culture and current trends, we couldn’t resist initiating the “get the fly out your hair” challenge.
After seeing our newfound ally perch in the perfectly coiffed gray hairs of a political candidate during a televised debate, we were amazed at how this tiny creature commanded his own two uninterrupted minutes. It was almost as if he was using those compound eyes to evaluate every inch and morsel of data that was emanating from the human subject.
Unlike humans who can be somewhat short-sighted at times, flies see the world at a 360-degree angle. Who needs fact-checkers when the resident pest showed us all that we needed to know? In general, flies are attracted to garbage, filth and waste. They gravitate towards matter that is decaying and rotting. It’s a tough assignment, but hey, they are God’s creations.
Granted, flies have a job to do, yet they annoy the heck out of us with the incessant buzzing and crafty maneuvering when they are approached by swatters. There are tried and trued ways to get rid of them in the literal sense, but figuratively we can all think of situations where if a fly was involved, it could alert everyone to deception and nonsense.
Thus, let’s broaden our collection of idioms such as “don’t get your panties in a bunch” and “take the chip off your shoulder” with “get the fly out your hair.” This is to be used when the subject appears to be calm, undeterred and assured in what he or she says or believes, but the reality is that they are full of…well, um…in the vein of Shaft, “shut your mouth.” And, by the way, check your hair for flies.
