Tales from the Trail: Ida B. Wells-Barnett Museum

Like most attractions, the Ida B. Wells-Barnett Museum and Cultural Center of African American History is closed until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as you prayerfully and cautiously make travel plans for 2021, we suggest that you plan a visit to this esteemed attraction.

Located in Holly Springs, Miss., the museum contains African American history artifacts and the collections of Ida B. Wells-Barnett. For those that don’t know, Mrs. Wells was known internationally as a “crusader for justice” due to her powerful writing and speeches about anti-lynching, oppression and civil rights.

Some of her best known quotes include:

“The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.”

“One had better die fighting against injustice than die like a dog or a rat in a trap.”

Mrs. Wells died in 1931, but her work continues to inspire and motivate generations of activists who are sacrificing their time, skill and talents to make this world a better place for everyone.  On May 4, 2020, she was recognized by the Pulitzer Prize board “[f]or her outstanding and courageous reporting on the horrific and vicious violence against African Americans during the era of lynching.”

We salute Mrs. Wells as a true trailblazer. Make sure you take your family, students and church groups to the museum when it reopens. In the meanwhile, keep teaching the youth about brave leaders such as this amazing woman.
