Let’s be honest, at this time of a global pandemic, failing economy, and intense racial climate, we know that this country not only needs but is ready for a change. This November election is soon to be historic but only time will tell for what exactly those reasons are.
For the Republican Party President Donald Trump is seeking re-election along with Vice President Mike Pence. Trump is viewed as perhaps one of the most controversial president in the history of our country. Don’t believe me? Just follow him on Twitter.
On the other side for the Democratic Party we have former Vice President Joe Biden with Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate. These two candidates say that they have the best interest of minority groups. Both have a history that at times says otherwise but for the soul of this nation which is the lesser or two evils?
Last year Senator Harris was in the race for President of the United States, only to fall short of making the ticket. However she managed to make a great impression on her then-rival Biden. Senator Harris did not hold her tongue when it came to letting Biden and others know on many occasions their actions didn’t match their words. During these moments certain facts about Senator Harris came out as well. Many people aren’t exactly sure if she is down for the culture or if she is just being used for her color to gain a political advantage. When she became a senator she relished in being the first Indian American to serve in that capacity. Now that she has a chance to be Vice President, the media is flaunting her as the first viable African American female to be featured on the Presidential ticket.
Senator Harris is a woman of many hats. She is an HBCU graduate and also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Prior to developing presidential aspirations and serving as a senator, she served as the San Francisco district attorney and also served as the attorney general for the state of California. As a prosecutor, she was very tough on crime. Many say she was too tough. She did support prison reform but she also helped fill jail cells. Harris has given inconsistent statements on her support for Medicare for all, but now appears to have developed a plan. She also failed to hold police accountable in multiple situations of gross misconduct but has now aligned herself with the movement to defund the police after the killing of George Floyd. These are just a few examples of times where she has appeared to contradict her own message. Interestingly, her newest position on these issues appear to be for the advancement of minority groups in America.
With everything going on in the world right now, it’s clearer than ever that we need change in this country. That goes for the pandemic, racial climate, and the economy. Knowing that this election can truly echo through history should be enough to move you to the polls alone. However, if for some reason you need extra motivation, I offer you these sentiments: We may not agree with everything that Senator Harris has done in the past but we can all admit that we aren’t perfect. We’ve all made mistakes in life and in our careers.
True leaders are not above criticism and correction. We applaud Senator Harris for being bold enough and humble enough to listen and use her platform to make changes that will benefit us all.
